COOi Studios expands its offering leveraging its design, technology and innovation capability to support large enterprises to combat climate change.

On the 8th of February 2023, COOi Studios officially launched COOi Climate Tech with an exclusive event attended by high-level executives, innovation heads, and journalists from the mining industry. The new business arm's goal is to provide large businesses with low-greenhouse gas (GHG) energy generation strategies and solutions across the value chain. This includes storage, transportation, operational procedures, and land use, utilising emerging technologies namely; AI, Iot and Machine Learning.

The launch event was held at The Silo Hotel, where guests got an opportunity to experience the COOi Climate Techs, showcasing the team’s eighteen months of hard work of planning, prototyping, development and testing by COOi Studios' Senior Technology Analyst, Lungelo Mpanza and his team.

Featured in the demonstration was the ESG Clicker, a web-based ESG innovation platform that aims to streamline the management of innovation projects by enabling innovation managers and their teams to drive end-to-end completion of the project within one platform; the Asset tracker, a software that allows for efficient asset management using a GPS tracking device which can transmit through satellites and linked to asset management software, Liquid level indicator, Smart Safety Helmet and an Emissions Dashboard to name just a few.

Keynote speaker, Mr. Themba Mkhwanazi, CEO of Bulk Commodities at Anglo American, spoke eloquently about the essence of COOi Climate Tech, touching on the challenges that mining companies face with climate change and the need for youth-led innovation partners and SMMEs to bring about solutions and change. “We must empower more enterprises with the skills and resources to shift into a low-carbon economy. The solutions presented by start-ups, such as COOi Climate Tech, have the potential to allow businesses of every variety to participate in the transition to our low-carbon future’, said Mr Themba Mkhwanazi.

‘When reflecting on why we do what we do – let us always remember that our task is to secure the future for the generations to come: a future where economic growth is inclusive and truly sustainable – enabled by businesses that have transitioned to a low-carbon future’.

Sandiso Sibisi, Founder and Director of COOi Studios, shared the journey of how COOi Climate Tech came to be, reflecting on the learnings from the challenges faced by youth-owned SMMEs and the inspiring stories of overcoming them to bring about innovation to combat climate change.

Sandiso is a technologist, innovator and budding entrepreneur with over 13 year’s experience in management consulting and is leading a team of young innovators in the Rosebank area of Johannesburg where the Studio is based. She is the former Head of Open Innovation (Africa) at Accenture and has led tech implementations, data strategy, cost reductions assignments in the Consumer Goods sector and Financial Services. Amongst other accolades she is a Sustainable Development Goals ambassador, Mzansi’s 100 Inspiring and Aspiring Leaders, a Play Your Part Ambassador with Brand South Africa, an Inspiring Fifty Women in Tech and a Mandela Washington Fellow. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce majoring Information Systems (Honours) from Wits University and has a Certificate of Social Entrepreneurship from INSEAD Business School. Sandiso is currently a Masters of Management- Innovation Studies candidate at Wits University.

Overall, the COOi Climate Tech launch event showcased the dedication and hard work put in by the COOi Studios team to bring about a meaningful solution to combat climate change. The event emphasized the need for collaboration and innovation to achieve sustainable solutions for the future. COOi Climate Tech provides a promising step in the right direction towards a sustainable future.
